Hollweg gone
Monday - July 14, 2008

The breakdown of the post-lockout Rangers continued tonight, as Ryan Hollweg was traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs for a 5th round pick. Good deal by Sather, as Hollweg had really worn out his welcome with most fans.

This comes just a few days after Jason Strudwick officially signed with the Edmonton Oilers, bringing the grand total of 2007-08 players to depart to ten (Jagr, Shanahan, Straka, Avery, Malik, Tyutin, Backman, Malik, Hollweg, and Strudwick).

The rebuilding Leafs presumably needed a cheap banger to replace buyout victim Darcy Tucker. Hollweg may throw the body around, but he's prone to extremely foolish penalties (particularly boarding calls), and can't score to save his life. In 200 games over three seasons with the Rangers, Hollweg managed only 5 goals and 12 points, while going -26.

Good luck, Toronto fans . . . if you loved Tucker you are gonna HATE Hollweg.

One day soon I'm going to go over the Rangers cap situation in relative detail. I believe more little moves like this are going to be necessary to accomodate some of their offseason acquisitions.

My thanks to my buddy, Rob, who called me dead smack in the middle of dinner to report this monumental news!
