Just a little while ago, Bird and I were on the phone talking about the Rangers and how exciting things were getting. Shortly after that, we received news that just kicked me in the groin.
Alexei Cherepanov, the Rangers' first round pick from 2007, suffered a heart attack during the third period of his Avangard Omsk game and passed away. He was 19 years old.
Nevermind the disappointment with never getting the chance to see this kid develop or to see him perform under the bright lights of Broadway. This is a tragedy, plain and simple. A 19-year-old world class athlete, gone WAYYYY before his prime.
If stories are to be believed, the ambulance that is normally present during games departed early, and there are questions as to whether proper first aid equipment was in working order. This is a matter to be taken up later.
For now, we extend our deepest sympathies to the Cherepanov family, and to his friends and teammates.
